Morning came too early, the sun streaking through the window to slash across my face.

“I’m going,” Garreth murmured. “Stay on your guard, and let me know if you get in trouble.”

I opened my eyes, my vision bleary, and saw him slip from the room. It took me a moment to remember where we were, and when I did, I sat bolt upright.

Shit. I was in Montblake’s lair, and Garreth had just returned to Olympia. I couldn’t be lying around.

I jumped out of bed and took a quick shower, then pulled on clean clothes. As soon as I opened my bedroom door, I spotted Phoebe.

“Did he leave?” she whispered.

“Yeah.”

“Good. Most people go to work in the day, but it’s still too dangerous for him to be here. Come on.” She grabbed my hand. “Let’s get breakfast.”

She took me to the kitchen, which wasn’t nearly as cheerful and friendly as the one back in Olympia, and we ate a quick breakfast of sugary cereal and milk.

“Does a body good.” She grinned as she crunched down on the sugar, and I smiled.

When we were done, I headed off to work. I’d intended to spend the day cleaning and snooping, and I'd hoped to locate the book on this go-round. However, I’d found nothing by the time I ran into Garreth at two that afternoon. The sight of him shocked me into dropping my mop, and I stared at him, eyes wide.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I gestured to the room I was cleaning, a modest space full of storage boxes at the back of the compound. If I wanted to hide something, this would be a perfect place.

“Searching for the book.”

“Have you been here all day?”

He nodded. “I’m good at avoiding detection. And Kate gave me a charm that would help me find the book. I wanted to try it.”

“Is it working?”

“No.” Dark shadows flashed across his face. “She’s a powerful witch, but Montblake could have bought even more powerful magic to hide the thing.”

“So it’s probably not in here, then.” I looked around at the boxes piled high.

“It could be,” he mused. “It’s as good a place as any if you want to hide something. But it might be impossible for us to find if he’s bought the right kind of magic.”

“I didn’t know that was a possibility.” My heart raced. I didn’t want to think about the chance of failure.

“It’s not likely, but it’s possible.”

“Whatever. I’m going to find it. But in the meantime, I need to finish my work so Montblake doesn’t become suspicious,” I said. “We still have a couple days left to hunt for it.”

“True. When do you want to go look for your grandmother?” Garreth asked. “She might be able to help us.”

“Tonight. I heard people talking about a party, so it’ll be a good time to slip away. I’ve felt more people watching me, so I need to go when they’re distracted.”

“I’ll meet you outside the compound then.”

“All right, but be careful.” I couldn’t help but worry about him, even though I knew he was skilled and strong.
